Who we are

The oldest organization of its kind, Ring One was founded in 1935 by the forefathers of Philadelphia boxing. The VBA was established to assist retired and some not so retired professional boxers that were down on their luck and needed a warm meal and a place to sleep. Over the years the VBA has evolved to where it is now. We are a 501 non-profit with a majority of our profits going to amateur boxing.

We at the VBA truly believe that amateur boxing saves lives. Getting as many kids as we can off the streets and into the boxing gym. Amateur boxing saved many of the members lives as young teens and we want to offer this opportunity to all members of our community.

Its membership consists of former fighters and others involved in the sport who meet monthly at the VBA Hall. The purpose of the VBA is to foster and promote the good and general welfare of amateur and veteran boxers. To take an active interest in the administration of all the laws that affect the sport of boxing in the State of Pennsylvania, to insure that it’s members are given the recognition deserving of their past efforts, and to protect the active boxers to the best of the association’s ability. This organization has been active in community affairs through the years and has built a solid reputation for its good work in and out of the boxing community.

Walk into the VBA and it may make you feel like you just stepped into the heart of Philly boxing history. Six hundred photos of fighters cover the walls, accompanied by gloves and gear. Most of the items were acquired during the club's 72-year history. At the VBA, members are ex-fighters, managers and promoters, both amateur and professional. Non-boxers, however, can apply for a "social membership". It takes a week for club brass to decide on your membership.
